Thermal Strength Reduction

Some structural designs require that the material ultimate and yield strength be modified to account for temperature effects. This most commonly takes the form of a strength reduction due to elevated temperatures.
  • The value for no strength reduction is 1.0. 
  • If the ultimate or yield strength is reduced, use a value between 0 and 1.0 to represent a percentage of ultimate or yield strength. 
  • If material strength will be increased, use a value greater than 1.0. 
Values for strength reduction can commonly be found in material property texts such as MIL-HNBK-5, ASM handbooks, or MMPDS. The temperature field does not actively calculate a value but serves as a reference for the reduction factors used when a report is generated.
